7th grade service!

Hi there parents of our wonderful 7th grade students.

I wanted to give you some information about the 7th Grade Service Project.

This is a separate project from the 2 community/2 school-based projects the students are to complete throughout the year.

The 7th grade service project is where the 7th grade students volunteer with an organization dedicated to working with an issue the student feels passionate about.  They should volunteer for a total of 4-6 hours, this can be done in one chunk or spread out over multiple visits.  They can do the service with some friends or with family members...they don't have to do it alone.

The volunteer portion of the service is due after MLK day on January 21st.  The students will then use their experience to write a speech that they will deliver to our core class in February or March.  If they have already completed the service portion, I suggest they write about their experience now, and I will support them with turning that writing into a speech in February.

At the end of October, all 7th graders did some research about organizations they would like to volunteer with.  In the past students have volunteered with Oregon Food Bank, Friends of Trees, Portland Parks and Rec, Potluck in the Park, and many others.  The following link had some good suggestions for organizations in the Portland area: http://www.examiner.com/article/volunteering-101-great-places-for-portland-teens-to-volunteer

Let me know if you have any questions!
