News From
Room 208
Edition 3 October 8, 2009
Dear families,
This week we have been reflecting on our Eagle fern experience. We are making a class book about our time there. We started our forest frieze as an attempt to bring the forest back to our classroom. I am enjoying watching the students develop new friendships. Eagle Fern was a great community building experience.
In Writer’s Workshop, we are working on punctuation of dialogue. They are working on a short fantasy story. Some students were very excited about this project with tons of ideas. I look forward to reading the stories next week.
Our study of The Ancient One continues. I gave a pop quiz last week that was painful for those students who were behind in their reading. Everyone has a different opinion about the book, which leads to interesting conversations. I think that this is what being a community of readers is all about.
Progress reports go out next week for students who are at a C grade or below. I created a homework reminder slip for those with late assignments. In addition, I plan on keeping students after school on Thursdays if they are missing any assignments.
Thank you for your support, Indigo

Our first field study was a fun filled and exciting day!!! I am so tired. Thanks to Doug Davidovich for saving the day and coming along to help! The weather turned around and the day was lovely. I was told a few kids drank water from the spring. Check in with your student to see if they drank some. The main worry is Giardia in a few months.... I will be calling to check in with a few parents.
I only gave reading as homework unless they are still working on their Essay of Concern. I recommended going to bed early because we had a big day and viruses are already going around in our classroom. I have been giving the handwashing reminder....
Take care, Indigo

We still need adults to come on our field study!!!

Tuesday September 15th 2009

Hello one and all,
I can't believe that I am writing my first BLOG! Well, really it is all about class communication and homework. I am hoping to have some students help to write this. Standing homework is 30 to 45 minutes of reading every night and then fill out the reading response form. Parents are to sign this form before it is turned in on Monday.
  • Essay of Concern first draft is due on Thursday Sept. 17th (see assignment below)Service Learning: Essay of Concern
    Open Your Eyes
    ESSAY:
After watching “If the World Were a Village of 100 People”, write your own essay that addresses an issue or issues important to your generation and identify the potential solutions. Include some specific steps of your solution or solutions. Your essay should include the following:

    • 5-paragraphs (refer to graphic organizer handed out in class)
    • A strong voice (think presidential delivery).
    • Personal story or a quote from a current political leader who shares your concern about an issue and offers a solution you agree with.

    ART:
After looking at examples (images by Nikki McClure, mathematical representations, etc), create your own poster on an 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper. This art will be the cover of your service learning binder. (Example: “a place at the table” phrase, with an image of a table with place setting, including the % relevant to number of people who are hungry) Think about:
    • Color scheme
    • Phrase/slogan
    • % relevant to issue
    • Visual nontext representation such as a symbol, a chart, table, or other.

    Timeline:
    Ideas: due 9/15
Essay rough draft #1: due 9/17
Essay rough draft #2: due 9/21
    Final draft: due 9/24
    Sketch for poster: due 9/25
    Final poster: 9/29
  • I sent home a weekly letter News from Room 208 on blue paper. If you would prefer this weekly communication via email then please send in your email.
I think that is all for now we will try to keep up with daily homework updates and perhaps some fun stories too. -Indigo
