20 Questions Poem                                 Name____________________
Rough draft due Thursday January 17th  Typed Final due Tuesday January 22nd
You will write a poem made up of 20 questions inspired by Jim Moore's poem and Sarah Bacus' example. Possible themes are: things we miss in our daily lives, objects in our house, what ifs, feelings, wonderings about things from the past and what they are doing now.
Twenty Questions
by Jim Moore
Did I forget to look at the sky this morning
when I first woke up? Did I miss the willow tree?
The white gravel road that goes up from the cemetery,
but to where?
And the abandoned house on the hill, did it get
even a moment?
Did I notice the small clouds so slowly
moving away?
And did I think of the right hand of God?
What if it is a slow cloud descending
on earth as rain? As snow? As shade?
Don't you think I should move on to the mop?
How it just sits there, too often unused?
And the stolen rose on its stem?
Why would I write a poem without one?
Wouldn't it be wrong not to mention joy?
Sadness,its sleepy-eyed twin?
If I'd caught the boat to Mykonos that time when I was nineteen
would the moon have risen out of the sea
and shone on my life so clearly
I would have loved it
just as it was? Is the boat
still in the harbor, pointing
in the direction of the open sea?
Am I still nineteen? Going in or going out,
can I let the tide make of me
what it must? Did I already ask that?
Twenty Questions by Sarah Bacus
Did I forget to take a deep breath this morning?  Appreciate the air moving
In and out of my lungs?  Did I miss the dogwood tree planted in the backyard
For Viv’s first birthday?  Are all the leaves gone now?
Did I notice Kean’s retainer sitting by the sink?  Hidden by drying dishes and a merry-go-round of spices?  How long has it been there?
And the brown lavender buds on the corner?  Withered but still faintly smelling
Of summer?  Why would I write a poem without those?
Wouldn’t it be wrong not to mention humor?  And its surly twin, sorrow?
Did I remember to laugh this morning?
Where would I be if I’d decided to work on that farm in Isla Vista?  Surrounded by avocado trees, mounds of asparagus, and sweet strawberries?  What’s growing there now?  Who’s hands are working the earth?
What will January hold? February?  Will I be able to appreciate all that is offered?
