Hunger Banquet
8th grade- Making a Difference
Dear Middle School Families,
This Friday, May 15th, SES is going to honor the legacy of MLK, Jr.  by hosting our annual Hunger Banquet.  This event is for students and staff to learn and experience first-hand the many issues related to hunger, homelessness, and poverty in Portland and around the world.

During their lunch period, students will be taking part in a hunger simulation where we will be serving rice to 50% of the middle school population,  rice and beans to 30%,  pizza to 15%, and a three-course meal to 4 students.  All students will have access to water.

We encourage all students to consider this as their meal for the day. However, we understand that some will want and/or need to have more than what they are given during this simulation. They will be allowed to eat before the event in class but will have limited options during the simulation. If there are any special concerns, students will have access to their regular school lunches. Also, off-campus for the 8th graders will not happen on this day.  Again, this is to allow students to experience for one lunch period what a majority of the world's population must endure year-round.

We appreciate your support during this event.
Sincerely,
Hunger & Homeless Cohort
